Daorae Korean BBQ Restaurant (revisit)

After an interval of almost 2 years, I finally re-visited my favorite Korean restaurant i.e. Daorae Korean BBQ Restaurant. As usual, after dining, the BBQ smoke will linger around me. However, I still love the food there and the service is always superb!
the FOC (refillable) side dishes-as always, i love its lotus root

kimchi jeon-gol (hot pot with kimchi, pork, mushroom, Korean noodles) RM55 for small pot

kimchi bok-um-bab (fried rice with egg) RM18
too hungry when this came and only realised that picture has not been taken after almost finishing it

Home-made Korean Chap Jae

I love Korean food and this dish actually debuts my Korean cooking. "Chap jae" or literally translated as "fried glass noodle" is a simple dish which most Koreans love. It can be done with or without meat; a perfect dish even for the vegans. As for my first trial, I have decided to do it with meat to add in more flavours.
Ingredients:
Korean glass noodles (boiled before frying)

meat (seasoned with soya sauce, pepper and corn flour)

chopped garlic and onion

sliced carrot (boiled first)

egg

sliced cabbage and mushroom (boiled first)

Method:
Heat oil in a wok, and put in garlic. Stir fry til light golden brown. Then, add in onion and the seasoned meat. This step can be skipped if you choose to omit meat. Add in boiled noodles and vegetables. Stir for a little while and then add in egg. Mix some sesame oil, soya sauce, sugar, salt and pepper and continue stirring til all is mixed well.

Optional:
You can also add on some chilli flakes as celery for stronger flavours.

a good plate of chap jae should have its noodles springy

Hope you have a good time cooking this dish. Happy weekend folks! ^.^

Bar B. Q. Plaza @ Gurney Plaza

An old pal who is working overseas came home recently. She told me she was looking for something different other than usual delicacies and healthy as well. Since I have never tried Bar B.Q. Plaza, I suggested that we gave it a try after seeing some good reviews about it.
Menu varies and is separated mainly into 3 categories - family set, supreme set and economy set. These sets are then sub-categorized into deluxe, mixed, pork, seafood and beef. After pondering over the menu for a while, we decided to take the "supreme seafood" set which comes with fish fillet, squid, shrimp, chicken, jelly fish, scallop, udon, sliced cabbage, baby corn, lettuce and tomato. We also added kimchi and pork as side dishes.

notice this place uses a green dragon as its mascot
the green dragon right outside of the shop

the barbeque sauce(a mix of cut chilli, garlic and squeezed lime)

kimchi RM3.90

pork RM5.50

our supreme seafood set RM35.90

the hot plate

spreading lard on the hot plate

cooking raw meat on the hot plate (cooks pretty fast!!) the annulus of the hot plate contains soup, most people cook vegetables in it

All the above meat were not marinated but taste very healthily delicious.
For first timers like me, this cooking method is indeed an awe and probably creating question marks on how to use the hot plate to cook the food. Well, no worries because this place has pretty friendly waiters/waitresses who are ready to tell you step-by-step on how to do it. If not, you can also refer to their "cooking manual" available on each table. :)

Daorae in Penang

As my birthday is just around the corner, my old pals gave me a birthday treat yesterday at the Daorae Korean BBQ Restaurant.

This restaurant is located right in front of the Bukit Jambul big roundabout in the i-avenue shoplots. It consists of 2 storeys, the lower one with tables and chairs and the upper with only tables. So you get to do the Japanese style seat. We also managed to get a place upstairs. It was a very cozy ambience when I first stepped into Doarae. The supervisors are Koreans while most of the waiters are of other nationality (Myanmar i supposed). But i have to say, the service is superb!
As usual, if you frequent Korean restaurants, they usually start all their meals with appetizers. At Daorae, we have 8 appetizers plus 1 vegetable soup to start off with.

every table is given a jar of their wheat tea-very refreshing and smells like "Horlicks"

your own set ofcutlery

yummy huh??
So here's what we ordered for the night...

2 bbq meat we had-both chicken and the meat is really tender!

top-"kimchi jeon", a savoury spicy Korean style pancake (warning: very big portion, we couldn't finish and the Korean boss was kind enough to tapao for us)
bottom-1 of my never-to-be-missed Korean dishes, "jap chae", in simple terms, fried glass noodle

top left-Korean style of "cawan mushi"
top right-appetizer soup with vegetables (love it!)
bottom-"soon-dubu-jjigae", soft tofu with seafood simmered in spicy sauce (also comes with a choice of chicken or beef)

As you can see, the prices are reasonable too as compared to other Korean restaurants.
In a nutshell, the food here taste good! I would love to go back again for other choices of food and this time perhaps more bold to try more conventional Korean food.
In the mean time, happy eating!!
