Sri Batik Nyonya Cafe (revisit)

A revisit to this Nyonya cafe after more than a year still gives me the same old feeling, unfriendly worker dressed in kebaya costumes. This time, my visit was prompted with the purchase of online voucher of buffet for 2 at 50% (RM9.90). Yes, a buffet at RM9.90 for 2 pax applicable only on weekdays, 12pm-3pm. The original price is RM19.80. As promised in the voucher, there were 10 dishes including white rice. Desert was one of the best things i enjoyed in my entire meal. I was a little unlucky as they didn't serve my favorite kapitan chicken or "jiu hoo char" which was one of the most famous nyonya dishes people could crave for.

Here are what they offered during the buffet:

 white tomyam (too sweet)

 salty vegetable soup

 tofu in sour sauce

 fried vegetable

 fried cauliflower and broccoli

 fried egg dipped in sweet and sour sauce

 pineapple kerabu

 fried kembung fish

cuttlefish curry with ladies fingers and tomatoes

 a new tank of ice cream consisting of 6 flavours

 dessert and drink

 bubur cacar

large crowd busy eating

In less than 15 minutes when the buffet started, the place was almost full. Food was running out pretty quickly. Some people actually dashed to grab the food as if they were suffering from famine before this. And as we were about to leave after a rather-satisfying meal (probably for my eating companions but not me), they brought in another new dish. Guess what? Fried instant noodle with pathetic vegetables and minced pork. *sorry the dish was too pathetic that i decided not to take any picture of it*

Anyway, what more could i ask for RM4.45 per meal? Well, i guess the saying "what you get is what you paid for" could very well be applied in this scenario. But, i am glad i went anyway. Sri Batik revisit number 3? Maybe not any sooner.

Although Chinese New Year has way passed by, i'm still in the mood of having big feasts. Recently, i had the opportunity again when we celebrated our boss' birthday at this very uniquely decorated Nyonya place called Sri Batik Nyonya Cafe. Out of the so many restaurants that i have been to in Penang, i like this most as the interior decorations matches its theme so perfectly! Even the waitresses wear kebaya! It was an ambiance meant to be remembered and re-visit.
Nevertheless, this elderly aunty (i suspect is the boss) who served us was a little too pushy with things. She will insist that you make a lot of order and all of them in big portion! If you say no, you will see an immediate change in her facial expression, which indirectly contributes to our entertainment of the day! ;p

 All in all, the food was not bad although a little too pricey. Will go there again, perhaps only for another celebration or special occasion.

Nyonya Cuisine

I could still remember the first nyonya restaurant I visited more than a decade ago, which was called the Dragon Inn, where they had very nice "Jiu Hoo Char" and some conventional nyonya dishes. Too bad, back then, internet was not very popular and blogging was definitely not known at all. I am not even sure if Dragon Inn is still open for business but if I happen to drive pass and find them still open, I will definitely pay them a visit and update you all.

Forget about Dragon Inn for a moment, today's post is on Restoran White House which is located in Penang Times Square. Restoran White House serves a variety of nyonya food as well as some western and malay cuisine.

During my visit there with a friend, we ordered the 'special nasi lemak', 'nasi rendang chicken' and 'ice lemon tea'. The 'special nasi lemak' is good, the 'nasi rendang chicken' is definitely something we will order again in our next visit while the 'ice lemon tea' is so thick unlike the usually diluted ones.

Restoran White House offers a wide variety of cuisine besides the nyonya ones. I am definitely putting it into my "gonna-visit again list".
